The City of Edmonton has chosen AECOM as design partner for the Capital Line South Light Rail Transit (LRT) Extension, collaborating with Capital Line Design-Build Ltd., a member of the Ledcor Group.
Construction will extend the light rail line by 4.5 kilometers from Century Park to north of Ellerslie Road and build two new stations and a maintenance and storage facility for light rail vehicles.
“We are excited to help realize this key infrastructure investment for the City of Edmonton, building on our multi-decade track record of delivering transformative urban light rail projects,” said Mark Southwell, CEO of AECOM’s global Transportation business, highlighting the company’s expertise in addressing complex systems integration challenges.
As the design lead, AECOM will oversee all infrastructure and systems design elements. The new line will run along the west side of 111 Street, featuring an underpass at 23 Avenue, and new bridges over Blackmud Creek and Anthony Henday Drive. The planned stations at Twin Brooks and Heritage Valley North will serve growing neighborhoods in the area.
“We are thrilled to continue our close partnership with the City of Edmonton, supporting its commitment to expanding sustainable transportation options that meet increasing demand for urban mobility choices for residents, employers, and visitors,” said Richard Barrett, CEO of AECOM’s Canada region.
AECOM recently developed a policy framework for light rail transit and creating design guidelines for both low and high floor LRT systems. The company has also acted as the Owner’s Engineer for the Valley Line, which spans 27 kilometers and is being developed in two phases.
