Colliers Project Leaders Inc. has been contracted to perform project management duties throughout design and construction of a new Recreation Complex and Idea Exchange library facility in Cambridge – one of two buildings planned for a 32.5-acre site.
In April 2022, Colliers plans to issue an RFP for design services and then the city will contact architectural services to start the design development process. The design and budget will be approved by council before moving to tender, currently scheduled to begin in 2023.
“Colliers is extremely excited to join the City of Cambridge project team for the delivery of the Cambridge Recreation Complex and library,” said Ron Spina, principal of Colliers. “We look forward to being a part of the design and construction that will provide Cambridge more recreation and culture opportunities in the near and far future.”
Colliers’ previous project experience includes Canoe Landing in Toronto, a similar project bringing together multiple user groups. Colliers will provide architectural and engineering support which will include inclusive project management oversight.
“We’re excited to see the joint-use campus moving forward with the expertise and knowledge that Colliers will bring to the project as we plan for a new Idea Exchange location in a shared facility that will serve as a vibrant community destination,” said Helen Kelly, Idea Exchange CEO.
The multi-purpose recreation complex will include:
- 10 lane, 25m swimming pool and warm water leisure pool
- Gymnasiums
- Running track and multi-purpose rooms
- Branch location of IDEA Exchange (Cambridge Public Library)
The facility will be located on city-owned lands, along with new two elementary schools and a childcare facility. A neighbouring residential development called South Point is also underway.
Council agreed with the recommended approach to locate two separate buildings on the joint site with shared amenities. The two schools will share one facility, and the Recreation Complex and Idea Exchange will share the second facility. The two facilities will frame a community park.
The future joint-use campus will offer educational, recreational and cultural activities for all ages in a rapidly developing community. The 32.5-acre site is located on city-owned land, north of the intersection of Dundas Street South and Branchton Road.
The Recreation Complex is expected to be completed in 2025.
“We’re looking forward to working with Colliers to create this community hub that will add to the vibrancy of our wonderful, growing city,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “This is an important next step and another partnership on a project that has already brought together so many.”
