Construction on Anne Street bridge in Barrie enters new phase

Ontario Construction News staff writer

Crews working on the Anne Street bridge over Highway 400 in Barrie began pouring concrete on the bridge deck last week.

The structure replacement was originally expected to be completed by the end of 2022, but after lengthy delays from challenges including weather, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) now says construction could be extended to the end of July.

The bridge near Dunlop and Donald streets was expected to be completed by the end of 2022. The ministry cited challenges, including weather, for the delays.

Led by the MTO, the project includes:

  • Demolition of the existing Anne Street bridge
  • Replacement of Anne Street bridge with a larger structure that includes wide sidewalks and a wider bridge deck to improve traffic operations and active transportation.
  • Improvements at the Anne/Edgehill and Anne/Donald intersections.
  • Major work on highway 400 to make way for the new bridge, which will be large enough to accommodate a wider highway 400 in the future.

McIntosh Perry Consulting Engineers completed the detail design and class environmental assessment study for the replacement of three bridges on Highway 400 at Dunlop Street, Anne Street and Sunnidale Road in the City of Barrie. New bridges will accommodate the future ultimate widening of Highway 400 through Barrie.

Also included in the project is the reconstruction of the Dunlop Street and Highway 400 interchange, Highway 400 pavement resurfacing from Dunlop Street to north of St. Vincent Street, Bayfield Street ramp resurfacing, Highway 400 median barrier replacement, drainage improvements within the resurfacing limits, design of noise walls in the vicinity of Dunlop, Anne and Duckworth and provision for Highway 400 future full illumination.
