A Toronto-based organization has developed a digital version of the Ontario Building Code (OBC), which it says it is making available in a free format through web and mobile applications.

AECO Innovation Lab says its offering at mybuildingcode.com will be without charge to users in its basic format, but it will offer enhanced features and functionality later for a subscription fee.

The technology startup says its free application will make the OBC’s regulations “accessible anytime, anywhere and on any device.”

“Building practitioners in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries rely heavily on the OBC to perform their day-to-day professional responsibilities. However, the paper version of the document is difficult to navigate, cumbersome to update and not readily available in the field,” AECO says in a statement. “My Building Code promises to transform the building code user experience for AEC professionals with an easy-to-navigate app that is always up-to-date.”

The applications includes a search function for quick lookup, linking of referenced regulations and exceptions, and pop-up definitions for clarification when needed. “This all adds up to an efficient and easy-to-use tool that enables productivity and saves time,” AECO says.

AECO says it introduced the new application at the interactive exposition hall of the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA) Virtual AMTS 2020 conference on Sept. 27.

“Our goal is to provide users with the best possible experience,” AECO says on its website. “The beta version is being launched for free so that users can provide feedback on the application and its interface, and make suggestions for future product enhancements.”

AECO says its final pricing model hasn’t yet been determined, but the “basic subscription is free, and includes the Ontario Building Code content as well as some features.” It says it will provide at least 30 days notice for enhancements that could involve a fee.
