Officials were in McNab/Braeside on Monday to announce their contribution to the region’s new, net-zero township office.

“The Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities are working together to support green infrastructure projects that are building healthier and cleaner communities,” said Minister of Rural Economic Development Bernadette Jordan.

The building will be designed to optimize natural light and passive solar heating, while minimizing water use. The building could realize a 67 per cent reduction in energy use from the current building. The energy savings, when combined with photovoltaic solar panels that will be installed for the building, will result in net-zero status.

The new township office will also help to improve efficiency for staff, council, and area residents through accessibility and functionality.

Jordan and Joanne Vanderheyden, second vice-president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), promised $2.7 million in grants and loans for the project, to come from the Green Municipal Fund (GMF). The building is expected to be completed during the summer of 2019.

The project aligns with McNab/Braeside’s sustainability plans and policies, which call for the township to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

“Our local governments are on the front lines of climate change. That means local action is critical,” Vanderheyden says. “Municipalities of all sizes are modelling green solutions that can be replicated and scaled up across the country for deep national impact.”

The Green Municipal Fund is funded by the Government of Canada and delivered by FCM.
