More than $17 million in federal funding will be used for two City of Pickering net zero community infrastructure projects – the Pickering Heritage & Community Centre and the Redman House Program Centre improvement project.
The new 44,000 sq. ft. centre with a community theatre and a museum will be the city’s first net zero facility, featuring enhanced insulation, triple glazed windows, solar panels, air source heat pumps and other similar features that in combination will meet the net zero design targets for the project.
Additional funding will pay for green retrofits to the Redman House Program Centre where work will include energy efficiency upgrades to mechanical and electrical components of the existing facility and accessibility improvements.
“This funding will help support exciting and meaningful projects that will bring our community together, while showcasing Pickering’s historic roots in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. I am proud that the City of Pickering remains steadfast in its commitment to the arts, heritage, culture, and building a sustainable community,” said Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan.
Infrastructure Canada is providing $12.5 million through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program for the construction of the Pickering Heritage and Community Centre and an additional $516,560 through GICB for the Redman House Program Centre Green Retrofit project.
Canadian Heritage has already approved $4 million through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund for the Pickering Heritage and Community Centre.
