The Toronto Society of Architects (TSA)ย and DesignTO will host an online event, Ideas Forum: Labour in Architecture, on Jan. 28 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. The forum will explore labour conditions and collaborative dynamics that shape the architectural profession.
The event will feature five rapid-fire presentations, each lasting 20 slides shown for 20 seconds, with a focus on improving practices and labour standards in architecture. Topics will include community organizing, new models of practice, and the push for greater transparency in the industry. Speakers will discuss opportunities and challenges in creating a fairer and more sustainable architectural profession.
A Q&A session will follow the presentations, providing attendees with the opportunity to ask questions and engage with the speakers. The event is free, but registration is required. It is eligible for 1.5 OAA Structured Learning Hours for professionals in the field.
Speakers:
Hazel Yorkย is an architect, behavioural scientist, and managing partner atย Hawkins\Brown. Based in London, UK, she has led the design and delivery of a range of public and private sector projects seeking ways to create social value through good design.
Je Siqueira is a registered architect with over 15 years of experience โ was one of the leaders in the unionizing efforts at both SHoP Architects and atย Bernheimer Architecture, helping establish the first private-sector architectural union in the U.S. since the 1930sย
Reza Nikย is a Toronto-based licensed architect, artist, educator and founding director ofย SHEEEPย โ an experimental art and architecture studio.ย
Yvonne Ipย (OAA, MArch, BFA, BA) is the past chair of the Grand Valley Society of Architects and a founder of Ontarioโs first architectural worker co-operative,ย Arise Architects Co-operative.
Johanna Hurmeย is an architect and co-founder ofย 5468796 Architecture. Her practice has been awarded numerous national and international awards.ย The event is hosted by TSA in partnership with DesignTO, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing design and fostering public awareness through exhibitions and educational programming.
