Magna is putting more than $470 million into bolstering its Ontario operations and building an electric vehicle battery enclosure facility northwest of Toronto.

The company says the new operation in Brampton, as well as expansions to its locations in Guelph, Belleville, Newmarket, Windsor and Penetanguishene are expected to create more than 1,000 jobs over the next few years.

The provincial government announced $23.6 million for the projects through Invest Ontario.

Expansions include adding e-coat, molding and welding capacity to its exteriors plant in Guelph to support electric vehicle production.

The new Brampton location – a leased facility -should be in operation later this year.

Magna started as a tool-and-die manufacturer in Toronto more than 65 years ago. The company has since grown into a multinational automotive supplier with 168,000 employees in 29 countries.

“This investment represents another tremendous show of confidence in the growing strength and resilience of our province’s auto sector,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Together, with our industry partners, we’re putting Ontario back on the map as we build up Ontario’s electric vehicle supply chain from mining to manufacturing. The cars of the future and the batteries that power them will be built right here in Ontario, by Ontario workers.”
