Modern Niagara Group Inc. last week unveiled 945 Princess Street, a sustainable innovation hub in Kingston.
The newly renovated 230,000-sq. ft. space represents a $70 million investment in energy efficiency and sustainability. Designed to foster collaboration and innovation, 945 Princess Street will serve as a dynamic environment for businesses across various sectors, featuring wet labs, shared analytical equipment, piloting bays, pre-manufacturing areas, and co-working spaces.
“Investing in Kingston and the transformation of 945 Princess Street aligns with Modern Niagara’s mission to lead the charge in sustainable innovation. Kingston’s rich history and growing role as a technology hub made it the perfect location for this project,” Modern Niagara CEO and president of construction Brad McAninch said in a stataement.
The energy-efficient upgrades to the building are projected to reduce carbon emissions by over 80 per cent, equating to approximately 2,000 tonnes annually, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero carbon status. The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has played a crucial role in this initiative, contributing $25 million through its Building Retrofits Initiative.
Carbon emissions are expected to be reduced by more than 80 per cent.
“This incredible space will serve as Kingston’s new innovation hub. Sustainability and innovation have been integrated into all aspects of its design,” said Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson. “I’m excited to see the businesses, technologies, and collaborations that will come out of this purpose-built space.”
Modern Niagara is one of Canada’s largest national mechanical, electrical, building services, and integrated building technology contractors, offering a wide range of services for both existing buildings and new construction.
