New Metrolinx video highlights upcoming Hamilton LRT construction

Ontario Construction News staff writer

In a newly released video, Metrolinx highlights the different phases of construction expected  when shovels hit the ground for the Hamilton LRT.

Early construction works for utility relocations is expected to begin later in 2022 and procurement – the Request for Qualifications for bidders – on the main construction contract is expected to start this year as well.

The video takes viewers through the upcoming steps needed to transform the roadway from its existing state into a modern transit corridor.

“Keep in mind this video is just showing one general example of how utilities like sewers and gas lines are laid out,” Metrolinx said in a statement. “The Hamilton LRT route contains a few different road and utility layouts, which means different areas may require slightly different approaches to construction and the final layout may differ from exactly what’s shown in this video.”

hamilton lrt videoWork to prepare for the future Hamilton LRT project continues to ramp up ahead of early construction activities. It includes dealing with vacant Metrolinx-owned properties. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming demolition work.

Demolition of several more Metrolinx-owned properties along the Hamilton light rail transit (LRT) route have been completed this year, following work completed at 23 other Metrolinx-owned properties last year.

Demolitions will prepare acquired properties for future staging and construction and ensure community safety, as the demolitions will reduce or eliminate the risk of fire, vandalism, and illegal activities in these vacant properties.

More details on the specific road layouts will be released at a future date.
