Next steps are being considered for the Ritson School Project in Oshawa, according to a report from regional staff. This phased redevelopment includes 660 unites with a mix of affordable and market-rate housing.

An RFP for the vacant land surrounding the school building will be released this spring.

The Ritson School building, located at 300 Ritson Road South, will be restored into a community hub with new public open spaces. Stabilization, remediation, detailed design, and future capital work will need to be completed by the region before the building can be reused as a community hub.

The original school structures were built in 1923 and 1928. The proposed site is located at 300 Ritson Rd. S., Oshawa, and has a site frontage of 415 feet on Ritson Road South and 544 feet on Huron Street. There is a former elementary school situated on the property that was operating until 2012. The existing building is a three-story structure of masonry, brick, and block construction.

The Region will also restore the historic Ritson School building into a community hub and create new public open spaces. Stabilization, remediation, detailed design, and future capital work will need to be completed by the Region before the building can be reused as a community hub.

The vision is for the site to have new publicly accessible open spaces that are vibrant, active and inviting with community place-making in mind.

The former Ritson School property, located at 300 Ritson Road South, Oshawa, is an opportunity to help meet the current and future needs of residents through community programming and by providing affordable and market-rent housing.
