The City of North Bay officially opened the newly constructed multi-use courts recently, another piece of a major downtown revitalization project.

The courts project was largely funded by a federal and provincial grant of more than $300,000 provided through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

Ongoing improvements have been taking place in recent years in the area, including the addition of the Family of Rotary’s Splash Pad in 2019. Future projects include a rehabilitation of Main Street, scheduled to begin in 2023 in order to upgrade much of the surface infrastructure in the downtown.

This includes; interlocking brick roadway and sidewalks, curbs and gutters, retaining walls, stairs, railings, benches and lighting.

The revitalization will include:

  • Detail design for infrastructure improvements and road reconstruction
  • Review and repair underground infrastructure, where required, including;
  • Watermain
  • Sanitary sewer
  • Storm sewer
  • Traffic signal replacement at various intersections
  • Street and decorative lighting improvements
  • Landscape improvements

“It’s great to see so many people already enjoying the multi-use courts in North Bay. These types of infrastructure investments are critical to ensuring that residents of Nipissing-Timiskaming can have safe and inclusive places to gather and improve their mental and physical health,” said Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota. “By investing in infrastructure we are creating jobs and building stronger, more resilient communities.”

Located in the downtown and waterfront area, the facility includes one full-sized court and one half-sized court. Painted lines accommodate basketball, ball hockey and indoor soccer.

“Supporting recreational infrastructure projects like North Bay’s sports courts, is a reflection of the Ontario governments commitment to protect the health and well being of individuals and families in the area,” said Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing.
