Northstar Clean Technologies Inc. saysย  has signed a non-binding letter of intent (LOI) with Great Lakes Port Management Inc. (GLPM), a subsidiary of the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA), for a long-term lease of a property in Hamilton to host the company’s planned Empower Hamilton Facility.

The LOI outlines a 15-year lease term with three five-year extensions for a site that will include a suitable operating building and four acres of land. The facility will process between 40,000 and 80,000 tonnes of asphalt shingle waste annually, diverting it from local landfills.

โ€œWe are excited to announce our expansion into Ontario and the future site of the Empower Hamilton Facility,โ€ Northstar president and CEO Aidan Mills, president said in the news release. โ€œThis location, in partnership with HOPA, is ideal for our first commercial operation in Ontario. We look forward to working with HOPA and making a significant contribution to reducing landfill waste in southern Ontario.โ€

Ian Hamilton, president and CEO of HOPA, welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing the strategic benefits of the Hamilton location.

โ€œHOPA is proud to support this innovative solution for Southern Ontarioโ€™s housing and construction sectors. The facility will be located on repurposed industrial land, supported by our multimodal transportation infrastructure.โ€

The Hamilton site was selected for its strong industrial base, proximity to key industry partners, and a significant feedstock supply from both Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), which has a population of over seven million.

โ€œWhile our primary focus remains on completing construction at the Empower Calgary Facility, securing the Hamilton site allows us to begin permitting, government grant applications, and feedstock negotiations in early 2025,โ€ Mills said.

Northstar hosted a virtual investor webcast on Monday to discuss its third-quarter 2024 results and provide an update on business developments. The webcast, available for replay, covered key updates including the progress on the Empower Hamilton Facility and the company’s overall growth strategy.

Northstar Clean Technologies says it is is a leader in sustainable recycling solutions, focused on the recovery of materials from asphalt shingles for use in the construction industry. The company operates across Canada and supports the circular economy by diverting construction waste from landfills.

The Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) manages the ports and marine terminals in Southern Ontario, facilitating trade and supporting local economic development with multimodal transportation assets, including rail and port access.
