Peel Region is fast-tracking infrastructure projects to meet Ontario’s housing targets, implementing a series of strategic actions designed to streamline development processes and promote sustainable community growth.
A key component of this effort is reducing the time required to review development applications. Over the past year, Peel has cut an average of 16 days from the review process by refining internal procedures and applying lean methodologies. This improvement is expected to significantly reduce delays for developers and expedite housing delivery across the region.
Peel is also overhauling its procurement strategies with innovative bundling methods aimed at increasing efficiency in project delivery. Recently, the region awarded its largest long-term design contract to date, aimed at supporting the development of essential housing-enabling infrastructure.
In addition to process improvements, Peel is making substantial investments to support growth. The expansion of the GE Booth Water Resource Recovery Facility, which received $130 million in funding, will increase wastewater capacity to accommodate the region’s growing population. This project is a crucial step in ensuring Peel’s infrastructure keeps pace with development.
Peel has also strengthened its partnerships with the development community. The region recently finalized three Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) that allow developers to take a more active role in housing-enabling infrastructure projects, including financing design work before capital budgets are approved.
Collaboration with other levels of government remains a cornerstone of Peel’s strategy. The region continues to work closely with local and provincial authorities to ensure growth is balanced with the capacity of existing infrastructure. A recent $35 million grant from the provincial government will further accelerate Peel’s ability to implement critical infrastructure projects.
To support new development, Peel is coordinating transportation infrastructure projects through a one-window planning approach. This strategy aligns water, wastewater, and transportation systems to minimize disruption to communities while addressing the needs of high-growth areas.
“As we respond to the increasing demand for housing-enabling infrastructure, we’ve pivoted our approach to ensure that our investments and policy adjustments foster sustainable growth and meet the evolving needs of our communities,” said Nando Iannicca, Peel Regional Chair and CEO.
In response to the accelerated pace of development, Peel is also investing in its workforce, hiring additional skilled personnel to manage the increased workload associated with these initiatives.
