The City of Barrie marked a significant milestone with the early completion of the Bryne Drive South extension. Mayor Alex Nuttall officially opened the new road, cutting the ribbon and becoming the first resident to drive on the road in one of the city’s new electric pick-up trucks.
“‘Finally’ is the word I keep hearing about the completion of the Bryne Drive South extension, and it couldn’t be more fitting,” Nuttall said at the opening ceremony. “Residents have patiently awaited this project, and I’m grateful to city staff for delivering it ahead of schedule.
“This extension will greatly enhance connectivity and ease traffic flow in the south end, benefiting both residents and visitors alike.”
The $16 million project, completed by Primrose Contracting, started construction in 2023, including five lanes of traffic, sidewalks, and separated cycling lanes, making it a comprehensive upgrade for the area. Additionally, new sanitary sewer systems, a watermain, and advanced stormwater treatment systems have been incorporated into the design.
The project also features an enhanced landscape plan, complete with new tree plantings, aimed at improving the overall aesthetic and environmental quality of the area.
City officials say the Bryne Drive South extension is a crucial part of ongoing network improvements, designed to facilitate better access to Highway 400 and nearby businesses. With this new link, residents can expect smoother commutes and improved connectivity within the city’s growing south end.
