Project partners and dignitaries gathered to break ground on the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) in Picton last week.
The Quinte Health redevelopment team is finalizing schedules, reviewing shop drawings for major systems and developing site logistics and phasing plans.
Infrastructure Ontario awarded the contract to build the new hospital to M. Sullivan & Son Limited. Construction is expected to begin in September.
“It is incredibly important for Sullivan to be a part of transformative projects within communities such as Prince Edward County. We recognize that hospitals are the lifeblood of these communities, and we take great pride in our role,” the contractor’s CEO Rob Ball said in a statement.
The new design will incorporate natural light in the atrium, energy-efficient windows throughout and sustainable materials wherever possible.
“We are delighted to partner with Quinte Health, M. Sullivan & Son and the Ontario government on this long-awaited project that will bring increased healthcare capacity to the Prince Edward County community,” said Michael Lindsay, president and CEO, Infrastructure Ontario. “As construction kicks off this summer, we look forward to seeing this project come to life.”
Key features of the new hospital site include:
- 23 inpatient beds
- 24/7 emergency department
- Acute inpatient unit supported by physicians within the Prince Edward Family Health Team
- Inpatient pharmacy
- Satellite hemodialysis unit
- Ambulatory care including clinics, medical day care, procedure rooms and medical device reprocessing
- Diagnostic imaging including x-ray, ultrasound, mammography and cardio-diagnostics
- Central laboratory
- Efficient access to other Quinte Health hospitals, secondary care in Belleville and tertiary care in Kingston
- New helipad
“Today, after years of advocacy and planning, we put our shovels in the ground together to build a state-of-the-art hospital for Prince Edward County,” said Todd Smith, MPP for Bay of Quinte. “It’s a terrific moment for health care in our community. I’m grateful to Quinte Health for its leadership and the many Back the Build partners who rose to the challenge in support of this project.”
I think that you mean Picton as opposed to Pembroke for the location of the new hospital in Prince Edward County. It happens at the best of times.
Yes, our mistake. Story has been corrected though I realize it may live on in some places with the incorrect city. Thanks for pointing it out.
