Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre unveils new Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre announced the completion of the Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held last week. The facility is scheduled to open to patients in early 2025.

The centre will provide care for various brain disorders, including mood and anxiety disorders, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and ALS. It aims to address the increasing demand for specialized brain health services, as one in three Canadians is expected to experience a brain disorder in their lifetime.

sunnybrookDr. Andy Smith, president and CEO of Sunnybrook, highlighted the centre’s significance in advancing brain sciences.

The project received substantial community support, including major contributions from Garry Hurvitz, which helped engage over 7,000 donors. Hurvitz emphasized the need for increased funding in mental health care.

The Ontario government announced a $60 million investment to support the centre’s mission to deliver high-quality care. Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones stated the government’s commitment to improving access to mental health services.

The Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre spans 120,000 sq. ft. and includes 47 private inpatient beds, outpatient exam rooms, and specialized facilities such as:

  • The Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation
  • The Murphy Family Centre for Mental Health
  • The Yuval & Lori Barzakay Brain Health Clinic
  • Ontario’s first circadian sleep centre

The design of the centre incorporates input from patients and families to create an environment conducive to healing.
