Southwestern Ontario โ€” Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) has been awarded $34 million from the Government of Ontario to expand high-speed internet access to 3,133 underserved homes and businesses in hard-to-reach areas throughout Southwestern Ontario.

The announcement was made in Wellington County by Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma who said the expansion will help close broadband gaps in rural communities, which have long faced connectivity challenges.

โ€œTodayโ€™s investment by the Government of Ontario reaffirms the provinceโ€™s dedication to bridging the digital divide in Southwestern Ontario,โ€ said Gary McNamara, SWIFT board chair. โ€œThis funding supports our mission for universal high-speed internet access and highlights Ontarioโ€™s commitment to equitable digital opportunities in rural communities.

โ€œThrough collaboration with government, private sector partners, and community stakeholders, weโ€™re not just building infrastructure; weโ€™re advancing equity in our regionโ€™s digital landscape.โ€

The SWIFT 2.0 project will impact several First Nation communities, including Eelลญnaapรฉewi Lahkรฉewiit (Delaware Nation at Moraviantown), as well as other dispersed and underserved locations across Southwestern Ontario. By partnering with local and regional service providers, SWIFT aims to accelerate the deployment of broadband infrastructure in these areas.

โ€œOur community is excited about the new high-speed fibre optic project, which represents a major leap forward for Eelลญnaapรฉewi Lahkรฉewiit and its members,โ€ said Eelลญnaapรฉewi Lahkรฉewiit Chief Justin Logan. โ€œHigh-speed fibre is vital for bridging gaps, supporting lifelong learning, stimulating small business development, and enhancing health services through digital health and telemedicine.โ€

Key project activities, including network design and permitting, are already underway. SWIFT has signed nine out of twelve contracts with leading local and regional service providers, including BrookeTel, Cogeco, and Execulink. Emain.

The remaining contracts are expected to be finalized by the end of the month. Construction is set to begin in the coming weeks, with all projects scheduled for completion by December 2025.

โ€œOur continued partnership with SWIFT is integral to connecting families and businesses throughout rural Ontario,โ€ said Lisa M. Thompson, Minister of Rural Affairs. โ€œBy connecting more than 3,000 homes and businesses through this investment, we are one step closer to delivering high-speed internet access to all corners of the province.โ€

The SWIFT 2.0 project builds on the success of SWIFT 1.0, which expanded broadband infrastructure across Southwestern Ontario, providing high-speed internet access to nearly 66,000 previously underserved homes and businesses.
