The Construction Institute of Canada (TCIC) is now accepting registration for courses that cover aspects of the new Construction Act, to take place over late summer and fall of this year.

Two of the courses specifically cover the role of construction adjudicator, and knowledge needed to fill the new position.

One, entitled “Building Fundamentals for the New Construction Adjudicator,” which says it will provide basic technical knowledge that will be required for assessing cases of notices of non-payment which have been referred to adjudication, including methods of construction used in vertical building. The course runs for two days in mid-August.

“Prompt Payment and the Mechanics of Construction Adjudication in Ontario,” meanwhile, provides information not only for adjudicators, but for any buyer of construction services, including contractors, sub-contractors, architects, and engineers. It covers the process of adjudication itself, including legal forms required to give notice of non-payment, timelines of adjudication, and how one might be triggered. This workshop is scheduled for August 20.

A final, sold-out course set to run in October, gives a more general overview of the new construction act.

The adjudication system, along with prompt payment rules, will come into effect on October 1 as part of the new Construction Act. When adjudication is triggered under the Act, involved parties can choose an adjudicator from a list of qualified adjudicators.

ADR Chambers Inc. was recently announced as being Ontario’s Authorized Nominating Authority (ANA). The ANA will be responsible for overseeing the adjudication process, including training and selection of adjudicators.
