Toronto’s MacLennan Jaunkains Miller Architects Ltd. has been awarded a $1.85 million contract for architectural and engineering design services for the City of North Bay Community and Recreation Centre.

A city staff report stated the company’s proposal scored highest, is fair and reasonable and provides the best overall value to the city.

“The firm will develop and review a complete detailed construction design package including costing, architectural, interior, mechanical, electrical, and service requirement plans related to the project,” the report noted.

The city received seven formal bids from its request for proposals process for the new twin-ice pad venue. Public meetings will be held in the fall and early winter, to showcase the plan to the community and council will invite public input, comments and suggestions for designers.

Construction could start as soon as the fall of 2020, and the chair of the city’s infrastructure and operations committee says that’s “lots of time” to get the preliminary design completed, incorporate comments and present the final plan to council.

Awarding the tender is a step forward after a two-year location search and once council approves the final design, the project will go to tender with construction expected to start in about a year.

“A year and a half to two years sounds like a reasonable timeframe for construction (to be completed) once they start.”

An old arena will be closed when the new one opens, creating an opportunity for something new in the West Ferris area of the city, but council has no plans for the site, as yet.
