Upgrades proposed for Whitby’s waterfront through Corbett Creek

Ontario Construction News staff writer

The Town of Whitby is looking for feedback on upgrades planned to improve accessibility along the Whitby Waterfront Trail through the Corbett Creek area.

Upgrades include:

  • Corbett Creek Bridge – built in 1992, the bridge is planned to be relocated and replaced approximately 120 metres north of the existing bridge to meet current design standards and accessibility requirements. The Waterfront Trail will be extended to the new bridge location.
  • Corbett Creek Marsh Boardwalk – also built in 1992, the boardwalk is planned to be replaced and widened to meet current design standards and accessibility requirements.

The plan includes moving the Corbett Creek Bridge to a new location about 120 metres north, to meet current design standards and accessibility requirements. The Waterfront Trail will be extended to the new bridge location.

The existing bridge is narrow, with a clear width of 1.75 metres and the supporting structure of the sewer the bridge is built over cannot accommodate a wider bridge replacement.

An engineering feasibility study determined the best location for the new bridge to be 120 metres north of the existing crossing and the new bridge will consist of structural steel trusses, metal railings and either wood or steel decking.

dUpdates for the boardwalk include:

  • New raised boardwalk will follow the existing alignment.
  • The boardwalk spans approximately 150 metres and will run adjacent to the Corbett Creek marsh edge.
  • The boardwalk will consist of structural steel trusses, metal railings, and wood or steel decking.
  • Existing boardwalk has a clear width of 2.25 metres, whereas the new boardwalk will have a minimum 3-metre clear width with additional widened rest areas/viewing areas.

Feedback on the plan is being accepted until Dec. 23.
