Canada lost 177,300 jobs last month, according to the ADP Canada National Employment Report produced by the ADP Research Institute.
The report, derived from actual ADP payroll data, measures the change in total non-farm payroll employment each month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
The construction industry is reported to have lost 8,400 jobs since the end of February.
“The effects of COVID-19 are clear as the labour market experienced relatively strong losses in many sectors across the board,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president at the ADP Research Institute. “Trade, transportation and utilities, leisure and hospitality and professional businesses services were the hardest hit sectors. While the health care sector experienced growth, social distancing has paused non-emergency and non-essential services, which will show its effects over time.”
Here’s how various industries fared:
- Trade/Transportation and Utilities: -55,700
- Leisure and Hospitality: -35,800
- Professional/Business Services: -21,100
- Manufacturing: -15,800 jobs
- Finance/Real Estate: -13,800
- Natural Resources and Mining: -3,600
The number of healthcare jobs jumped by 11,700 during the same period, the report showed.
