Stantec has been selected by BC Hydro to provide transmission and distribution engineering as well as project delivery services for the electrical infrastructure in the province, part of BC Hydro’s 10-year capital plan to modernize its electrical grid.

Under the $186-million master services agreement (MSA), Stantec will spearhead transmission and distribution engineering, encompassing substation design and a suite of engineering disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, and geotechnical.

“Stantec is proud to assist BC Hydro in this major endeavor to modernize and expand the electrical grid in British Columbia,” said Mario Finis, executive vice president of Energy & Resources at Stantec. “Renewable energy generation is only part of the transition to a clean energy future.

“We must also design, build, and maintain the transmission and distribution infrastructure needed to safely and reliably deliver clean energy to meet the needs of our communities. Stantec will be there to support these grid modernization efforts in British Columbia and around the world.”

Stantec’s responsibilities extend to project management, procurement, cost control, and logistics management, ensuring seamless execution throughout the project lifecycle.

The partnership between Stantec and BC Hydro signifies a commitment to comprehensive support, from initial system studies to environmental permitting, Indigenous consultation, engineering design, construction management, and post-construction monitoring.

BC Hydro’s 10-year capital plan, “Power Pathway: Building BC’s Energy Future,” is a multifaceted approach aimed at achieving several key objectives. These include supporting the province’s electrification efforts to meet CleanBC emissions reduction targets, reinforcing the system for enhanced customer connections and accommodating load growth, and sustaining the system’s reliability while keeping rates affordable for consumers.

With Stantec’s expertise and BC Hydro’s forward-thinking strategy, the partnership is poised to drive tangible progress towards a sustainable energy landscape in British Columbia and beyond.
