Canadore College in North Bay is receiving $316,796 to support two trades training programs.
The funding will support electrician-construction and maintenance training specific to youth and Indigenous peoples, for 17 participants, and general carpenter training to women, Indigenous peoples, new Canadians, and youth at risk, for another 17 participants.
Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli announced the funding Nov. 8.
“Our government is taking action to address the skills shortage in Ontario,” Fedeli said in a news release.
“We know there are vacancies in the skilled trades, and we are working hard to help people in Nipissing match their skills to the ones local employers need. This investment means that more people will get trained in the professions we need for today and tomorrow.”
Funding is in addition to $514,624 announced earlier this year for Canadore to deliver cook training in North Bay, and general carpenter training in North Bay and Parry Sound through Ontario’s Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program.
According to the news release, one in five new jobs in Ontario over the next five years is expected to be in trades-related occupations.
The province has said it’s committed to providing $20.8 million for pre-apprenticeship training, which marks an increase of $2.5 million from the previous year.
