Representatives from the provincial government were in Leamington August 12, to announce that the ministry of transport intends to widen Highway 3 between Leamington and Essex from two to four lanes.

Ontario Minister of transportation Caroline Mulroney and Rick Nicholls, MPP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington made the announcement, but stipulated the work is not expected to begin until 2021.

“I’m proud that our government is delivering on its promise and making this project a priority by accelerating the planning, so that we can get shovels in the ground as quickly as possible,” said Nicholls. “Not only will the widening of Highway 3 improve safety, but it will also bring economic opportunity to the residents and businesses of Essex County.”

A piece of the well-travelled road between Windsor to County Road 8 in Essex in was widened in 2012. Since then, the push has been on to complete the job.

“I am very pleased to learn of the announcement of the widening of Hwy 3,” said Lakeshore Mayor Tom Bain. “MPP Nicholls and I have been advocating for this for several years.”

Daily use of the stretch of Highway 3 can soar to as many as 17,300 vehicles.
