More than 3,000 new homes are coming to Mississauga as the city and federal government announce funding for housing construction.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie says the city has an agreement with the federal government for $112.9 million for housing starts over the next three years.

The funding will help the city build more homes faster by reducing red tape and streamlining the approval process for development applications and building permits, Crombie says.

The federal government says the new homes will help the city reach its goal of increasing the housing supply by more than 13,000 units by 2026.

The funding will also help develop affordable rental housing and townhouses, and build more housing on underused lands including government-owned lands.

“Today’s announcement will help fast track over 3,000 homes in the next three years and over 35,200 homes over the next decade. By working with cities, mayors, and all levels of government, we are helping to get more homes built for Canadians at prices they can afford,” said Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.

The federal government says the new homes will help the city reach its goal of increasing the housing supply by more than 13,000 units by 2026.
