Ottawa’s agriculture and rural affairs committee has given homebuilder Caivan Communities the go-ahead to build a manufacturing plant on a 20-acre site near Highway 416 to make “specialized and purpose-built housing components and materials.”
The 137,000 sq. ft. structure at 3809 Borrioskane Rd. would include a showroom, a daycare centre for employees’ children, and a 100,000 sq. ft. manufacturing area.
City staff say in a report that the project is expected to create as many as 250 full-time jobs, and generate as much as $50 million in annual production revenue. The builder says it plans to spend as much as $5 million annually on research and development, including partnerships with the University of Waterloo and the University of Ottawa.
The manufacturing facility will “provide a noteworthy contribution towards the home-building industry in Ottawa through the robotic manufacturing of home-building components, such as roof trusses and wall panels,” staff say.
City council approved the recommendation on Wednesday as part of its “bulk consent agenda”.
