On March 5 at the Toronto Marriott Hotel over 150 delegates from the Waste Management industry attended the Ontario Waste Management Association’s Annual Conference. The event included OWMA members, municipal and provincial stakeholders.

This exciting full-day event kicked-off with an address from Dennis Goulet, President of Miller Waste Systems, and newly appointed Chair of the OWMA. The morning included an update on the Blue Box Transition to producer responsibility, and a report from Ontario’s Assistant Deputy Minister, Alison Pilla, on extended producer responsibility (EPR) and landfill disposal (EA and capacity).

The Chairman’s reception included Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Training & Skills Development, Hon. Monte McNaughton, who spoke to attendees about the government’s new approach to training and skills development. Minister McNaughton also presented awards to graduates of the OWMA’s Mentor and Leadership Program.

The OWMA is the province’s largest, most effective environmental services association representing the waste management and recycling sector. Its membership includes more than 250 companies and organizations in the private and public sectors, which manage 85% of Ontario’s waste.

The association works with its members to develop detailed research and provide expert advice with the objective of increasing recycling, addressing climate change and fostering investment and innovation in the waste management sector.

The OWMA also provides opportunities for members to network together while supporting their professional development and career growth with educational events and webinars.

As the voice of the waste management sector, OWMA monitors regulatory and legal developments to develop detailed research and provide expert advice to the government focused on creating a cleaner environment and moving toward a more circular economy in Ontario.
