Phase 2 of infrastructure renewal project begins in London’s Old East Village

The second phase of the Dundas Street infrastructure renewal project in London is underway with construction expected to wrap up this fall.

Construction along Dundas Street will include upgrading sewers and watermains, and will relocate utilities underground. A new streetscape will then be constructed to improve the experience for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders. Work includes widening the sidewalks, adding trees, and installing brighter streetlights for shoppers and diners on Dundas Street.

Also, a separated eastbound bike lane will also be created on the south side of Dundas Street and will connect to existing protected bike lanes on the east and west end of the project helping better link the downtown to Old East Village for cyclists.

Dundas Street East between Adelaide and Ontario Streets in Old East Village (OEV) is a dense commercial area with high transit ridership. To help provide a safe, pedestrian-friendly environment with access to transit connections, this project will improve the streetscape with wider sidewalks, separated cycle lanes, trees and other urban design elements, while simultaneously addressing necessary underground work, including replacing and upgrading utilities, aging sewers and watermains.

The project will continue work to build a vibrant commercial core with a unique heritage character. The goal is to create an environment that serves as a community hub for local residents and draws visitors as a distinct destination.

Last year, the first phase of the project reconstructed Dundas Street between English Street and Ontario Street. Some minor finishing touches remain in the block between Rectory and Ontario Streets which will be completed later in 2021.

The project has received funding commitments from the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario to support 10 transit and transit-supportive projects.
