City of Toronto opens energy and water reporting with submission deadline July 2

Ontario Construction News staff writer

Building owners in the City of Toronto are now able to access the energy and water reporting portal. The deadline for submissions is July 2, 2024.

To familiarize stakeholders with the new requirements, a webinar will be held March 19 from noon to 12:45 p.m. to provide insights into the updated energy and water reporting regulations. The webinar details can be found on the city’s website or click this link to register.

Buildings contribute to more than half of Toronto’s greenhouse gas emissions, primarily attributable to energy and water consumption.

Under the provisions of Toronto’s Energy and Water Reporting by-law, as outlined in Chapter 367 of the Municipal Code, building owners of structures measuring 10,000 square feet and larger are mandated to annually report their energy and water usage. Larger buildings, spanning 50,000 and above are slated to begin reporting in 2024 and those 10,000 to 50,000 square feet will be required to report in 2025.

Along with municipal regulations, Ontario’s Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB) regulation (O.Reg. 506/18) requires substantial buildings to submit annual energy and water utilization data to the Ministry of Energy by July 1 each year.

The implementation of annual energy and water use reporting serves as a valuable tool for building owners, allowing them to monitor their structures’ performance longitudinally and compare it with similar buildings. This comparative analysis facilitates the identification of opportunities to enhance energy efficiency and diminish greenhouse gas emissions.

Building owners seeking guidance on whether their structures fall under the reporting requirements, along with access to pertinent information, resources, and support from the City of Toronto, are encouraged to refer to the official website for comprehensive details on the energy and water benchmarking and reporting process.
