The City of Mississauga has selected Stantec to lead detailed design and contract administration on the Dundas Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Mississauga East Corridor, a project that will add more than seven kilometres of BRT infrastructure and eight new stops.

The project has a total estimated budget of $580 million. It will cover design, construction, land acquisition and coordination of regional utility upgrades aimed at boosting construction efficiency.

“The Dundas BRT will provide direct connections to urban light rail and the wider regional transit network,” said Susan Walter, executive vice-president of infrastructure at Stantec. “BRT solutions are a growing trend across North America, and we are excited to support the City of Mississauga.”

The project is being delivered in line with the City’s 2018 Dundas Connects Master Plan and aligns with the Metrolinx 2041 Regional Transportation Plan. It is expected to support regional economic growth, new housing supply and job creation.

In addition to transit design, Stantec will partner with engineering firm CIMA+ to replace approximately 12,500 metres of watermain and 12,600 metres of wastewater main. The work will involve both trenchless tunneling and open-cut methods and will be coordinated with road construction to reduce community disruption.

“Mississauga is experiencing significant growth in its rapid transit system, driven by increased transit and housing demands,” said Sam Rogers, the city’s commissioner of transportation and works. “We look forward to collaborating with Stantec to deliver this priority project for residents and businesses.”

The design will include dedicated centre-running bus lanes, Intelligent Transportation Systems for signal optimization, and upgraded stops that meet or exceed accessibility standards. The project will also incorporate complete street principles, with new sidewalks and cycle tracks for pedestrians and cyclists.

Stantec’s role includes design, tender preparation, procurement support, construction oversight and post-construction administration. The scope also covers utility relocation, permitting and environmental considerations to reduce the carbon footprint.

Stantec has worked on a number of BRT projects across North America, including vivaNext in the Greater Toronto Area, MAX Purple and MAX Yellow in Calgary, OC Transpo’s Transitway in Ottawa, and the LA Metro Orange Line Extension.

In the GTA, the firm is also providing services for the Hazel McCallion Line, Ontario Line, Toronto Subway Program and the Waterfront East LRT Extension.
